Located in the heart of the Costa del Sol, Marbella (beautiful sea in Spanish) is beyond a doubt the Jewel of the Coast. It enjoys a central location, being an hour from the British colony of Gibraltar, a half hour drive from the capital of Málaga (and its international airport), and just two to three hours by jet from most European cities. It also benefits from a culturally significant location on Europe´s southernmost coast - in the the most Spanish of provinces - Andalucia.
The birthplace of Flamenco, and modern bullfighting, Andalucia captures, for many, the true essence of Spain. From its many local ferias or festivals to its rich cuisine and the lively spirit of its people, Andalucia is like nowhere else in the country. Its strong Moorish history is preserved, and reflected, in its rich architecture, art, music and cuisine. Within Andalucia itself, Marbella enjoys a prime central location. Nearly equidistant from the culturally endowed cities of Seville and Cordoba, the splendor of the Moorish palace or Alhambra in Granada - and its ski resort of Sierra Nevada - day trips beckon the appreciative explorer. Smaller towns with exotic names like Jerez, Ronda, Alpujarras, Casares, Nerja are equally alluring and hold their own unique charms to be discovered first hand. For the more energetic traveler, Melilla, Ceuta, Tangiers, Morocco and North Africa are just across the Straight of Gibraltar by ferry and provide their own unique itineraries. Just as alluring, the cities of Cadiz, and Almería beckon from the extreme ends of Andalucia. For nature lovers, the spectacular landscapes, animal life and vegetation of the Natural Parks of Doñana and Cabo de Gata provide a quiet and reflective refuge just a few hours drive from the city.

Marbella itself is a study in contrasts. While wandering through the casco antiguo (the old town section of Marbella) and its centuries old alleys and whitewashed dwellings, one can spot the latest fashions in a modern storefront. On Marbella's main street, Porsches and Ferraris pass horse drawn carriages and historic monuments rub elbows with the latest architecture. Don't forget about the police on horseback that radio their fellow officers cruising shiny, new Harley Davidson motorcycles.
Why is Marbella so popular with all ages? There something for everyone in the family here. Golfers enjoy the many nearby world-class links; Valderama and Sotogrande to name but two (the area is also known as the "La Costa del Golf"). The children will be torn between the many swimming beaches, amusement parks, nature parks and theme parks. After the family shoppers empty their arms of their purchases from nearby duty free Gibraltar, and souvenir-rich Ronda, they are off to Marbella's La Cañada Shopping Mall, the many boardwalk stands and chic Puerto Banus. In the evening, everyone enjoys the varied restaurants and the more energetic can hit the pubs and nightspots and fill the itinerary until the wee hours of the morning.
